What is Fabric of Gold? Imagine a piece of felt. Now imagine that it’s woven by hand from hair thin solid gold thread. It’s the only practical way to describe the feel of our weave from gold strand. The weave is totally unique. We are aware of only one city located on the Black Sea coast where this hand weave is made.
The weave has its origins many centuries ago in Greek, Turkish, and Armenian cultures. Elantolia’s master weavers weave the solid gold strands with the concentration of a surgeon, at a painstaking pace, twisting, looping, setting the gold fiber that is less that a third of a millimeter in width. Elantolia executes the weave in solid 22 karat yellow gold, and solid 18 karat white gold. Pure gold, or 24 karat gold, is too soft to use for the weave in most instances. Elantolia also weaves in Sterling silver.
The attained weave is called Fabric of Gold by Elantolia. The Sterling silver counterpart is called Fabric of Silver. The weave that is created is classified by its number of rows. Elantolia makes the thinnest, and therefore, the most delicate, Fabric of Gold available, a mere three strands wide, or just around 3/16th of an inch (3 cm). We have handcrafted Fabric of Gold weaves as wide as thirty-one strands, or 3 inches wide. The forming of Fabric of Gold into world-class jewelry demands a long list of jewelers’ skills, and many years of experience working with its unique character and qualities.
Elantolia works the weave into wonderful new shapes which have never before been attempted or accomplished, and embellishes many of these designs with precious and semi-precious stones of high clarity and color, using VS1/I clarity diamonds, where diamonds are used, and superb Swarovski crystals we call White Sapphire in place of diamonds. In many creations, you will see a mixture of white and yellow gold Fabric of Gold, or silver and gold in other designs.
The weave is so attractive that it drew the attention of both Italian and Japanese jewelry makers; they wanted to automate the process and use the weave in their own designs. However, the weaving process is so complex that it defied their best efforts to mechanize and automate it. They left with a renewed respect and admiration.
